On Wednesday, April 8, Mayor Jerry Demings visited the Solivita’s Democratic Club with an introspective bid on his upcoming run for the next Governor of Florida.
With more than three hundred residents of Solivita in attendance, the mood was exuberant as one of Orlando’s most popular politicians took to the stage. A self-described man of faith who believes in a higher calling, Jerry Demings has been married to Val Demings, a U.S Congresswoman, for more than 38 years. Together, they have three sons and five grandchildren. Jerry Demings is the proud descendant of a father who drove a cab at night and a mother who cleaned homes five days a week.
“Public service is obviously in my blood after having served more than 45 years in one form. I have been the first black Chief of Police, the first black Sheriff (of Orange County) and the first black Mayor of Orange County. I am here tonight as the personification of the American Dream as I run for Governor of the great state of Florida,” Demings said emphatically.
Demings went on to request the assistance of all those in attendance to help change the future saying, “We need quality healthcare, we need better pay for teachers, we need a focus on the people.” Demings added, “I am not trying to just be the Governor of the just the Democrats. Autocracy not the way.”
