Gervin Jawaski Lewis, 46, faces five charges after a woman reported being threatened with a weapon and sexually assaulted in downtown Orlando.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police arrested a 46-year-old man Tuesday, October 6, following an investigation into a reported armed sexual assault in downtown Orlando.
According to the Orlando Police Department, officers responded to the 600 block of West Amelia Street at approximately 5:40 a.m. after receiving a report that a woman had been attacked.
When officers arrived, the woman told investigators that a man approached her, threatened her with a weapon and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the area.
Orlando Police Identify and Arrest Suspect
Investigators identified the suspect as Gervin Jawaski Lewis, 46, of Orlando.
Police said detectives quickly identified a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident. That investigative lead helped officers locate and detain Lewis a short time after the reported assault.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith praised the responding officers and detectives for their work.
“Our officers acted quickly and decisively to apprehend this dangerous individual,” Smith said in a statement. “Their investigative work and determination got him off our streets and demonstrate our commitment to providing the service our community deserves.”
Suspect Faces Five Criminal Charges
Lewis was arrested and charged with five offenses:
- Armed sexual battery
- Armed robbery
- False imprisonment
- Vehicle burglary
- Hindering 911 communications
Authorities also reported that Lewis had an outstanding arrest warrant in another Florida county.
Police have not released additional details about the circumstances of the alleged assault or the events leading to the charges.
Investigation Remains Active
The Orlando Police Department said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Authorities indicated that additional information is being withheld to protect the integrity of the investigation.
The woman’s identity has not been released in the police account of the incident.
Lewis is accused of the offenses listed above. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
