Frost Praises Closure of ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Detention Facility

Congressman Maxwell Frost says controversial Florida detention site “never should have existed”

Maxwell Frost is applauding the closure of the controversial detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” calling it a failed operation marked by alleged inhumane treatment, environmental concerns, and wasted taxpayer money.

In a statement released Friday, Frost said he spent months conducting oversight visits and raising concerns about conditions inside the facility, which became the subject of criticism from immigrant rights advocates and environmental groups.

“From the day ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ opened, I was on the ground conducting oversight into the inhumane conditions inside this facility — and I went back again and again to expose what was happening and fight to shut it down,” Frost said.

The Orlando-area congressman said the facility’s closure comes after what he described as millions of taxpayer dollars being spent on an operation that faced mounting legal and public scrutiny.

“Now, after wasting millions in taxpayer dollars and facing ongoing environmental lawsuits, this failed experiment in human suffering is finally closing,” Frost added.

The facility, which critics nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” drew statewide and national attention over allegations involving detainee treatment, overcrowding, and conditions inside the center. Advocacy groups and legal organizations had repeatedly called for increased oversight and transparency regarding operations at the site.

Frost argued the closure should not end public scrutiny into how the facility operated.

“Human beings were subjected to horrific conditions, denied dignity, and treated as less than human in a facility that never should have existed in the first place,” he said. “Floridians deserve accountability for every dollar wasted and every abuse that took place behind those doors.”

The closure marks the latest development in Florida’s ongoing debate over immigration detention policies and government oversight of privately operated facilities.
