Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Commissioner Bakari Burns Reopen Renovated Poppy Park Playground in District 6

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 6 City Commissioner Bakari F. Burns joined city officials Thursday to celebrate the reopening of the newly renovated playground at Poppy Park, marking another step in the city’s broader effort to improve neighborhood parks.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 19, highlights one of 11 park and playground upgrades planned across Orlando over the next two years. City leaders say the initiative is part of a long-term investment in community spaces designed to support families, promote physical activity and enhance quality of life.

The updated playground at Poppy Park features modern equipment tailored for two age groups—children ages 2 to 5 and those ages 5 to 12—allowing for safer and more engaging play experiences. Enhancements include expanded climbing structures, multiple slides and new design elements intended to encourage exploration and social interaction.

City officials emphasized accessibility as a central component of the redesign. The playground now includes an ADA-accessible swing and dual swings that allow adults to sit alongside their children, creating a more inclusive environment for families of all abilities.

In addition to the new play structures, infrastructure improvements such as an upgraded drainage system were completed to ensure the park remains usable and safe during varying weather conditions.

The reopening of Poppy Park reflects Orlando’s continued focus on revitalizing neighborhood spaces, particularly in growing communities like District 6. Officials say the remaining park projects will roll out in phases, further expanding access to modern, inclusive recreational facilities throughout the city.
