Igniting Confidence: Orlando Fire Department Hosts Empowerment Workshop for Young Women

This weekend The Orlando Fire Department will proudly host Burn Bright, its inaugural empowerment workshop for young women ages 14 – 20 at Valencia College West Campus.

The workshop will provide 30 young women an opportunity to explore a career in public safety. Current female Orlando firefighters will provide support and instruction as the young women navigate through fire and EMS exercises such as fire apparatus familiarization (pump, ladder and hose line operations), Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training, and intense physical fitness exercises.

This workshop will help young women build confidence through newfound abilities and teamwork, plus they’ll develop skills to overcome obstacles in a comfortable and supportive environment.

Burn Bright was designed to provide young women with an opportunity to gain self-confidence whilst they begin their journey in the EMS and fire service. Nationwide women make up only about nine percent of fire personnel, and a program such as Burn Bright is helpful in terms of increasing that number.
