ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Police have arrested a suspect connected to a downtown shooting that happened during a late-night disturbance near Church Street and Orange Avenue.
The Orlando Police Department said its Fugitive Unit arrested Devan Cameron Upshaw on July 1 in connection with the June 28 shooting. Police said the incident created a significant disturbance in downtown Orlando and endangered the safety of people in the area.
Upshaw, whose date of birth is listed as March 24, 2001, faces two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and culpable negligence, according to police.
The arrest follows an incident that happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. on June 28, when officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Church Street and Orange Avenue. Police previously said the shooting stemmed from an altercation involving two groups of people that escalated into a physical fight.
During the confrontation, a woman was struck in the foot after a firearm discharged. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Police said the department remains committed to maintaining safety and order in Orlando’s downtown district.
“Acts of violence that threaten public safety will not be tolerated, and OPD will continue to hold offenders accountable,” the department said.
The case remains under investigation. Any additional court proceedings will determine how the charges move forward.
