On Tuesday, former Commissioner Regina Hill pleaded not guilty on elderly exploitation and fraud charges in her criminal case. Hill’s attorneys filed a waiver of personal appearance at the arraignment which allowed her the privilege to not appear in court.
Last month, Hill was arrested following a yearlong investigation by FDLE. The law enforcement agency said Hill was arrested and charged with elderly exploitation and fraud.
Assistant Commissioner with FDLE, Lee Massey said, “Mrs. Hill effectively betrayed the trust of her community, by taking advantage of a 96-year-old elderly citizen which is one of the most vulnerable in that community.”
Hill released a statement denying the charges. “My confidence in the integrity of the legal process and faith in God is unwavering, and I’m deeply moved by the support from our community. This support is a constant reminder of the strength and resilience that defines District 5, and it fuels my continued dedication to serving and uplifting every community member through these trying times. I will wait for my day in court when I’ll be able to prove my innocence and that I always acted in good faith,” Hill stated.
On April 1st, Governor DeSantis issued an Executive Order to remove Hill from the City Commission. Following the Executive Order Hill was escorted out of Commission meeting at City Hall.
On April 5th, Judge Heather L. Higbee granted the plaintiff an injunction against the former commissioner. Judge Higbee said, “The Court has jurisdiction over the vulnerable adult. The Court has jurisdiction over subject matter and under Florida law reasonable notice an opportunity to be heard had been given. The notice was given to the Respondent in a manner that was sufficient to protect her rights to due process.”
To fill Hill’s seat, City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer called for a special election. That election will be held on May 21st. Today is the last day for candidates to file to run for Commissioner Hill’s seat. Currently, there are nine people who have already filed.
If convicted, Hill faces life in prison.
