MUMBAI, India — Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and producer Kiran Rao announced their separation on July 3 through a joint statement on Twitter.
“In these 15 beautiful years together, we have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy, and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect, and love. Now we would like to begin a new chapter in our lives — no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other,” said Khan and Rao in the statement.
The couple, who has been married for 15 years, also shared a video message for fans that said the two are now in a comfortable space and still consider each other a part of the same family.
“Aap logo ko dukh bhi hua hoga, achcha nahi laga hoga, shock laga hoga. Hum bas itna apko kehna chahte hai ki hum log dono bohot khush hai aur hum ek hi parivaar hai (You all must be shocked by the news. We want to tell you that we are very happy, and we are a part of one family),” said Khan and Rao.
The “Ghajini” star also opened up on the status of Paani Foundation.
Paani Foundation is a non-profit founded by Khan and Rao a few years ago that works in the field of drought prevention and water management.
“Aur Paani Foundation humare liye Azad ki tarah hai, jo humara bachcha hai, Toh humlog humesha family hi rahenge. Humare liye aap log dua kariye, prarthna kariye ki hum khush ho. Bas yehi kehna tha hum logon ko (Paani Foundation is like our son, Azad. We will always be family. Please pray for our happiness. That is all we wanted to say),” said Khan.
The two can be seen holding each other’s hands in the clip, which is doing the rounds of the internet. The clip is an excerpt from the former couple’s recent interview. Khan and Rao got married on Dec. 28, 2005. They welcomed their first son, Azad, through surrogacy in 2011. Khan was earlier married to Reena Dutta but got divorced after 16 years of marriage in 2002. He has a daughter Ira and son Junaid from his first marriage with Dutta.
Khan has often spoken out for various social causes, some of which have caused political debate. He founded and presented the television chat show “Satyamev Jayate,” in which he raised awareness of critical social issues in India.
Meanwhile, Khan is awaiting the release of his film “Laal Singh Chadha” which is the official Hindi remake of the Tom Hanks-starring “Forrest Gump.” The movie, directed by Advait Chandan, also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan in a lead role.
