ORANGE COUNTY, FL — A confrontation over loud music at an Orange County apartment complex turned deadly last week, ending with one man dead and his neighbor facing a first-degree murder charge, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).
Deputies say the incident occurred on Jan. 21 and began as a dispute over excessive noise. Investigators allege that the suspect, identified as Michael Thrasher, left his apartment armed with a handgun and went to the apartment of his neighbor, Arnold Rapatalo, to confront him about loud music.
According to OCSO, video surveillance from the apartment complex shows Thrasher banging on Rapatalo’s door, kicking it, and attempting to force his way inside by turning the doorknob. Authorities say that when Rapatalo opened the door, Thrasher pushed it further open, escalating the encounter.
What began as a verbal dispute quickly turned physical, deputies said. Investigators allege Thrasher struck Rapatalo, and the altercation continued outside the apartment. At some point, authorities say Thrasher backed away, pulled a handgun from his waistband, and shot Rapatalo in the chest.
Rapatalo collapsed at the scene and later died from his injuries, according to deputies.
Following their investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office concluded that Thrasher committed first-degree felony murder while engaged in a burglary. He was arrested and remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
The shooting has renewed concerns within the community about how quickly everyday disputes can escalate into deadly violence. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details about potential court dates or whether Thrasher has retained legal counsel.
