Governor Josh Shapiro’s Home Set on Fire in Early Morning Attack; Suspect in Custod

Early Sunday morning, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s home was set on fire by a man who climbed over the property’s fence, authorities said.

In a post on X, Shapiro shared that he and his family “woke up to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after an arsonist set fire to the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg.” The fire was set around 2 a.m.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 38-year-old Cody Balmer, who is now in custody. After scaling the fence, Balmer reportedly made his way inside the residence. He was apprehended in the Harrisburg area shortly after the governor and his family were safely evacuated.

Balmer will face charges of attempted homicide, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. Investigators also revealed that Balmer used a homemade device to ignite the fire.

In a statement, Shapiro emphasized that his immediate focus is on his loved ones. “Right now, I want to be a good father, a good husband, and take care of my family,” he said.

However, he made it clear that the attack would not impact his leadership. “I will not be deterred in my work,” Shapiro added.

Authorities are investigating whether the attack was politically motivated.

A full security review is currently underway. Officials said, “We will do our best to ensure the governor and his family are safe and that an incident like this does not happen again.”
