Once again, the FAMU National Alumni Association Greater Orlando Chapter celebrated its annual Alumni Appreciation Day event at Magnolia Park in Apopka.
Chapter President Patrick Gray said the chapter is shaping up to raise more money for scholarships than any other alumni chapter across the nation.
Universities and colleges are suffering major budget cuts under the Trump administration. FAMU experienced a significant funding cut of $16.3 million. FAMU Alumni chapters across the country continue their mission to fundraise to help students who may not otherwise be able to get a college education. This year, two Wekiva High School students and one Ocoee High student received scholarships to FAMU. Cameron Gilreach attends Ocoee High and will be attending FAMU this Fall. Gilreach has already been accepted into FAMU’s College of Engineering. He also plans to be a member of the Marching 100. Gilreach told The Florida Sun, “I’m really excited to go because, I’m ready to be surrounded by people of my color, who have the same aspirations as I do. And overall, I just want to do well.”
In addition, the Orlando Rattlers are coordinating a new event this November during the Florida Classic Weekend.
