ORLANDO, Fla. — School resource officers at Dr. Phillips High School arrested a 17-year-old student after authorities said he brought a loaded firearm onto campus, prompting a swift response that officials say prevented potential danger.
According to police, school resource officers were notified Thursday that a student on campus was armed with a firearm. Officers quickly identified the student as Joshua Brown, 17, and located him inside a classroom.
When officers approached, Brown attempted to flee, authorities said. However, school resource officers intervened and safely took him into custody without reported injuries.
Investigators said a loaded 9mm handgun was recovered from Brown’s backpack, which was in his possession at the time of the arrest.
Brown was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including:
- Possession of a firearm on school property
- Possession of a firearm by a minor
- Resisting arrest without violence
Police officials emphasized that the situation was resolved quickly due to community cooperation and established safety protocols.
“This is exactly how it’s supposed to work,” said Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith. “Our officers acted quickly on a tip from the community.”
Authorities have not released additional details about how the firearm was obtained or whether any threats were made. Officials said the case remains an active investigation.
Law enforcement leaders continue to stress the importance of reporting suspicious behavior, particularly in school environments where early intervention can prevent harm.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
