Florida State Senator Geraldine Thompson released a newsletter today updating Central Floridians on the seventh week of the 2024 Legislative Session in Tallahassee.
“This week, I attended two Senate sessions and various committee meetings, those committees being the Appropriations Committee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development and the Committee on Fiscal Policy. We heard bills relating to court interpreter services, homeless service professionals, rural emergency hospitals, coverage for biomarker testing, juvenile justice, cancer funding, voter registration applications, traffic enforcement, compensation of elected officers and judges, hot car death prevention, the taking of bears, social media use for minors, judgment liens, and many more.”
“During the Appropriations Committee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development, I withdrew SB948 related to Divine Nine Specialty License Plates and SB982 related to Specialty License Plates/Project Addiction: Reversing the Stigma, as these two bills are now being incorporated into SB434, sponsored by Senator Harrell, related to Specialty License Plates. I voted in favor of SB1256 related to Voter Registration Applications, SB1226 related to the Department of Transportation, and SB1032 related to Transportation. I voted against SB1464 related to Traffic Enforcement. The bill, sponsored by Senator Calatayud, would forbid camera systems built by a Chinese manufacturer from being used for traffic enforcement, and would require a county or municipality to enact an ordinance to authorize the installation of traffic infraction detectors. I argued that the bill enacts onerous requirements now to install, operate, and purchase these detectors. We need local solutions for local problems rather than have the state decide. The bill was recorded favorably. “
