Scam Alert: Fake QR Code Stickers Found on Downtown Orlando Parking Meters

Orlando, FL – Parking enforcement officials have recovered approximately 200 fake QR code stickers from parking meters across Downtown Orlando, warning residents and visitors of a growing scam targeting drivers.

The counterfeit stickers are designed to closely mimic official city codes, but instead redirect users to fraudulent websites that can capture personal and financial information. The scam appears to be part of a broader trend in cities nationwide, where scammers exploit public payment systems using deceptive QR codes.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and follow these safety precautions:

  • Inspect before you scan: Check QR codes for any signs of tampering, such as peeling edges or stickers placed over existing labels.

  • Avoid damaged or suspicious codes: If something looks off—like unusual placement, font, or coloration—do not scan it.

  • Use official apps or methods: Whenever possible, pay for parking through trusted city apps or payment kiosks, rather than scanning a code directly from the meter.

  • Report suspicious activity: If you see a questionable QR code or believe you’ve been a victim of this scam, report it to the Orlando Police Department immediately.

The City of Orlando has not released information on whether any arrests have been made, but the investigation remains ongoing. Residents can stay informed and view a video alert from officials about the scam here.

Anyone who believes they may have scanned a fraudulent QR code should monitor their financial accounts closely and consider reporting the incident to their bank as well as local law enforcement.

Stay safe. Be alert. And always double-check before you scan.
