City of Orlando Announces “Many Voices, One Sky” Theme for Words & Wonders Poetry Contest

Community invited to submit poetry celebrating unity, diversity, and shared experiences during National Poetry Month

ORLANDO, Fla. — The City of Orlando has announced the theme “Many Voices, One Sky” for its annual Words & Wonders Poetry Contest and is inviting community members to submit original poetry reflecting unity, diversity, and belonging as part of National Poetry Month celebrations.

The 2026 theme encourages writers of all backgrounds to explore the shared experiences that connect people across cultures, perspectives, and generations. City leaders say the initiative is designed to highlight the power of storytelling and creative expression in strengthening community bonds.

Inspired by the daily rhythm of Orlando’s international travel hub, where visitors from around the world arrive and depart under the same sky, the theme underscores the beauty of diversity within a unified community. The contest also coincides with national observances marking the United States’ 250th anniversary, prompting participants to reflect on what it means to belong in a nation shaped by many voices.

Camara Gaither, the City of Orlando’s Poet Laureate, is encouraging residents, students, artists, and city employees to take part in the creative opportunity.

“This is an invitation to look at the world around you and put your observations into verse,” Gaither said. “Through poetry, we can better understand the connections that bind us together.”

Encouraging Reflection Through Poetry

Contest organizers say submissions may explore themes such as unity, identity, culture, and shared experiences in communities across Orlando and beyond. Writers are encouraged to draw inspiration from everyday life — including family traditions, neighborhood connections, classroom experiences, and community interactions.

Participants may consider questions such as:

  • What does unity look like in a nation rich with differences?
  • How do diverse cultures and perspectives shape our shared future?
  • What can we learn by listening to stories different from our own?

Submissions may be personal, imaginative, reflective, or hopeful in tone.

Submission Deadline and Participation Details

The City of Orlando will accept poetry submissions through May 14, 2026, at 4 p.m.

Residents interested in participating can find contest rules and submit their entries through the City’s official website.

This initiative aligns with National Poetry Month programming and reflects the City’s continued collaboration with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, reinforcing a shared commitment to community engagement, cultural enrichment, and creative expression throughout Central Florida.

City officials say the Words & Wonders Poetry Contest remains an important platform for amplifying diverse voices and celebrating the stories that unite the community.
