Today, the Orlando Police Department swore-in its newest recruit. On his very first day on the job, Officer Stone Hicks, saved puppies and rescued the Orlando City Soccer’s jersey.
Stone even received a new patrol “car” on his first day of fighting crime and catching bad guys.
Stone is only 4-years old and already knows he wants to be a Police Officer. Even with a hurdle in his way, Stone lived his dream today.
Stone has End-stage kidney disease (ESKD). ESKD is when the kidneys can no longer support the body’s needs. Stone’s little body has been through many different procedures. So, his celebration today was an extraordinary way to recognize his courage.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation stepped-up and made today extra special for Stone. The day started when bad guys dognapped a woman’s dog. Stone was immediately whisked away to the dog’s rescue. After he rescued the dog, he had a host of cheerleaders, community supporters and his Orlando Police colleagues waiting for him to get back to the office. Stone came back to reporters and at one point, Stone even had to dodge the paparazzi and leave through the back of the Police Department. But, of course, The Florida Sun refused to leave without meeting him.
Around 1:00 p.m., Stone was honored with an award ceremony. While receiving his award for being a hero, the crowd went wild. Stone kindly interrupted, pointed toward the audience and told Deputy Chief Jonathan Bigelow, “I’d better write a ticket for them!”

Bigelow told The Florida Sun, “Make-A-Wish reached out to us because Stone has a desire to be a Crime Fighter for the day.” Bigelow continued, “This has happened in other jurisdictions where we felt, this is an opportunity for us to make his dream come true. Once they said he wants to help us, by all means, we always welcome the help.”
Kiera McKeever, Lead Wish Coordinator said, “This is so important to Stone because this is his one true wish. It’s truly a community effort and we couldn’t have done it without the Orlando Police Department and INTER&Co Stadium and everyone else involved in the community. Thank you to all of our supporters. This is really a great day and it really exemplifies strength, joy and hope in the community.”
Bigelow added, “To make this wish come true was such a blessing for our department, our community, to just showcase Stone. I’m sort of at a loss for words on how well this makes everybody feel inside to be able to give back.”
The award ceremony was complete with a signed a proclamation from Mayor Buddy Dyer. Mayor Dyer recognized Stone for his bravery, passion and his determination to strengthen The City Beautiful. Mayor Dyer honored Stone by declaring April 24th, 2024 as Stone Hicks Day in the City of Orlando.
