Orange County Public Schools crowns champion of inaugural regional Scripps Spelling Bee at Disney World

After 23 intense rounds of spelling prowess, Orange County Public Schools  announces the top three students of its first regional Scripps Spelling Bee. Elvis Avetis, Discovery Middle School; Nathan Crabbendam, Sunridge Middle School; and Velvizhi Sethirayar, Orlando Gifted Academy, had a buzz-worthy performance. The event, hosted by the Foundation for OCPS at Walt Disney World Resort, showcased the remarkable talents of 24 student finalists who captivated the audience with their linguistic dexterity.

Their commitment to education and fostering academic excellence has paved the way for this momentous occasion. OCPS extends its heartfelt gratitude to both organizations for their unwavering dedication.

The atmosphere was electric as the participants showcased their spelling prowess, battling through a challenging array of words. After an arduous journey, the top three students emerged victorious, securing their spots in the national competition. These exceptional spellers will represent OCPS May 26-June 1, 2024, as they compete against the nation’s finest young wordsmiths. Disney will help fund expenses for these students as they compete in Washington, D.C.

“The Scripps Spelling Bee has been an incredible platform for our students to showcase their talents and dedication,” said Nancy Golden, OCPS program specialist, K-12 academic competitions. “We are immensely proud of all the participants who demonstrated their linguistic skills and determination throughout the competition.”

The inaugural regional OCPS Scripps Spelling Bee not only celebrated the students’ achievements but also highlighted the district’s commitment to fostering a love for language and literacy.
