OCSO Body Camera Footage of Deputy Involved Shooting

On April 19, 2024 at about 10:30 p.m., Orange County Sheriff deputies were called to the Indigo Winter Park Apartments on U.K. Circle. A caller reported that a man, (Jesse Santino Lewelling, 47), was holding a gun and pointed that gun at several residents.

When deputies arrived, they said they heard one gunshot, and encountered the Lewelling, who was still holding the gun. According to OCSO, a deputy fired their service weapon, striking the man. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) stated, deputies rendered aid and the man was transported to the hospital in critical condition. OCSO also stated, Lewelling’s firearm was recovered on scene.

The camera footage of the shooting was edited to include explanations of the series of events. Immediately before the shooting, the footage shows the suspect raising one arm. The footage is obstructed and does not show what the suspect is doing at the time he was shot.

Parts of the video included edits describing the series of events and not actual footage.

According to OCSO, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, FDLE will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once that process is completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation.

The deputy that fired their weapon is on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.

According to OCSO, Lewelling is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, resisting an officer with violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. In addition, Lewelling had an outstanding warrant from California for larceny and weapons charges.

This story will be updated when more information is released.
