Mega Church Bishop T.D. Announced Steps Aside

Bishop T.D. Jakes announced Sunday that Pastors Touré Roberts and Sarah Jakes Roberts will become the next senior pastors of The Potter’s House in Dallas, marking a historic leadership transition at one of the world’s most influential megachurches.

The announcement, made during Sunday service, signified a generational shift in spiritual leadership and comes as Jakes approaches his 50th year in public ministry. He emphasized that this is not a retirement, but a strategic expansion of his legacy—moving into a broader focus on economic empowerment and cultural impact.

“This elevation is not a departure but a rebirth,” Jakes told the congregation. “Leadership is not static; it demands the courage to evolve.”

The Roberts, who were installed as assistant pastors in 2023, will assume full pastoral leadership later this year. Sarah Jakes Roberts, a bestselling author and founder of the Woman Evolve movement, and Touré Roberts, founder of ONE | A Potter’s House Church, have been instrumental in shaping modern faith leadership that resonates across generations.

This transition follows several milestones in the ministry’s evolution, including the couple’s relocation to Dallas and the sunset of the iconic Woman, Thou Art Loosed conference. It also follows a recent health scare Jakes experienced in late 2024 and the culmination of his final International Leadership Summit, prophetically themed “Changing of the Guard.”

Jakes will remain as Chairman of the Board and spiritual overseer of The Potter’s House while continuing to grow his business and philanthropic ventures through the T.D. Jakes Group. He also announced a new podcast series with iHeartMedia titled My Next Chapter, further expanding his reach beyond the pulpit.

The move reflects a long-planned strategy to preserve and propel the legacy of The Potter’s House while equipping the next generation to lead.

Bishop T.D. Jakes suffered a massive heart attack while delivering a sermon in the pulpit last November. Though Jakes has not been accused of any wrongdoing, his name has appeared in online speculation related to the ongoing investigation into Sean “Diddy” Combs. The leadership transition was announced weeks later and has not been directly linked to the controversy.
