Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Iconic Star of The Cosby Show, Dies at 54

Los Angeles, CA— Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor, musician, and director best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the groundbreaking sitcom The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54 from an apparent accidental drowning, according to a report first published by TMZ.

Representatives for Warner have not yet released an official statement, but law enforcement sources confirmed that Warner was found unresponsive early Tuesday morning. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing, but foul play is not suspected at this time.

Warner’s death sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and among fans who watched him grow up on television, evolving from a wisecracking teen in the 1980s into a reflective, multi-hyphenate artist in adulthood.

Born August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner landed his breakout role as Theo at just 14 years old. His character—funny, flawed, and fiercely human—became a touchstone for a generation of Black boys on screen. The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992, was a ratings juggernaut and cultural milestone that redefined portrayals of Black family life in American media.

Warner didn’t disappear after the show’s run ended. Instead, he pivoted—quietly, consistently—into deeper, more introspective work. He starred in television dramas like Sons of Anarchy and The Resident, won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2015, and earned praise for his poetry, jazz-funk music, and advocacy work.

Though he largely avoided the controversies surrounding his former co-star Bill Cosby, Warner often reflected publicly on the show’s legacy with nuance and care. “We can hold both things as true,” he once said. “That the show meant everything to millions—and that we’ve had to reckon with what’s come after.”

In recent years, Warner became a father and often spoke about finding joy in parenthood, privacy, and purpose. He continued performing, recording music, and touring as a spoken-word artist.

“He was the voice of calm, of reason,” said longtime friend and collaborator Jill Scott. “Malcolm brought Black masculinity into homes with grace and intelligence. He never chased fame—he chased depth.”

Warner is survived by his partner and young daughter. Details about memorial services will be shared by the family in the coming days.
