A local youth arts mentoring organization is sharing young voices in order to share light in isolation. This new year, Write To Be Scene Inc., established in 2019, is celebrating all those who came out to our New Year’s Eve bash.
Write To Be Scene (a 501c3 organization) is a teen theatre production company of Central Florida whose purpose is to amplify youth voices through providing collaborative arts workshops and live performance opportunities. The organization helps participants practice being seen and heard while experiencing being accepted for it.
Our youth writers and spoken word poetry performers brought some shining perspectives of resilience, permission to fail but to keep going, love of oneself as well as support from others that transcends tough times.
Orlando’s Underground Teens Poetry Slam (OUT Slam), is one of our organization’s offerings. It is our monthly spoken word poetry competition that allows teens to compete in front of a live audience of mixed ages, who come eager to hear the perspectives of the younger generation and learn and grow by supporting them. Our winning performer of the competition walks away with $50, which for the month of December was sponsored by Publix Supermarkets.
Kelly’s Homemade also donated a 25 scoop party packs of ice cream for the occasion in support of our youth performances, which featured special talents — Colin James and Natalie Reese — a poetry and songwriting duo from DeLand who are also college freshmen. Their album “Library of Your Love” is out now on all streaming platforms. Please help us support them!
Congratulations to Naomi on taking home the $50 at her first time competing in the teen poetry contest with us. Finally, we want to give a special shout out to Isabelle Veno, who is a long time returning participant. Your support helps keep us going, too. Veno said, “I thoroughly enjoy attending every Write to Be Scene event, as it helps grow my platform with poetry. It’s a great starting point for beginner poets and for young teens to enter into the creative world of poetry, feeling welcomed and heard.”
Would you like your teen to have a shot at winning $50 and a platform to share their voice with our community at our next scheduled competition? Please email us for more information by visiting write to be scene dot org.
OUT Slam occurs on the final Tuesday night of every month starting at 7:30. The next event will be January 28, 2025 at Grumpy’s Underground Lounge, located at 1018 N Mills Ave in downtown Orlando, Florida. The winner will receive $50 in cash, sponsored by the Florida Storytellers Association. Thank you also to Amanda Fields of Grumpy’s Underground, owner and sponsor of our host venue.
