TOKYO — Vinod Kumar, India’s discus thrower, won a bronze medal at the ongoing Paralympics in Tokyo on Aug. 29 with an Asian Record in sports class F52.
“Vinod Kumar— Remember the name,” tweeted the official account of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 for India.
“It’s a #Bronze for #IND as his best throw of 19.91m in the Men’s Discus Throw F52 final earns the nation their THIRD medal of the day. P.S— He also set a new Asian record!”
His best attempt was registered in the fifth try of 19.91m, with the other throws being 17.46 meters, 18.32 meters, 17.80 meters, 19.12 meters, and 19.81 meters.
“India is rejoicing thanks to Vinod Kumar’s stupendous performance! Congratulations to him for the Bronze Medal. His hard work and determination are yielding outstanding results. #Paralympics,” tweeted Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.
Poland’s Piotr Kosewicz won the gold medal as he registered the best throw of 20.02 meters in the second attempt. In comparison, the silver was won by Croatia’s Velimir Sandor (19.98 meters).
Earlier, Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the high jump event. Nishad made a jump of 2.06 meters, and as a result, he sealed the silver medal.
In the event, Nishad also created an Asian Record, which turned out to be a good affair for the Indian para-athlete.
USA’s Roderick Townsend won gold while Dallas Wise shared the second spot with Nishad. Townsend made the jump of 2.15 meters while Wise recorded a leap of 2.06 meters. Nishad and Wise both finished on the same mark, but Nishad had crossed the 2.02 mark in his first attempt while Wise took two.
Modi also congratulated Nishad.
“More joyful news comes from Tokyo! Absolutely delighted that Nishad Kumar wins the Silver medal in Men’s High Jump T47. He is a remarkable athlete with outstanding skills and tenacity. Congratulations to him,” said Modi.
Earlier on Aug. 29, India’s para table tennis player Bhavina won silver as she lost the gold medal match to China’s Zhou Ying 3-0 in the women’s singles — Class 4.
“A #Silver medal #IND will remember Bhavina Patel’s incredible #Paralympics campaign ends with a podium finish as she loses out to # CHN’s Zhou Ying 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 in her Class 4 #ParaTableTennis final! Thank you for the moments,” tweeted India’s official account for Paralympics.
With the silver medal, Bhavina became the first table tennis player ever to win a medal at the Paralympics for India and the second female athlete after Deepa Malik, the Paralympic Committee of India’s chief, achieve this feat. Deepa had won silver at Rio 2016 in women’s shot put.
