Home for the Holidays? Ball on a Budget!

Denise Y. Mose, Ph.D, Columnist

I want your home to look amazing this holiday season. I really do. However, I don’t want you blowing your credit card to make that happen. Dr. D is always thinking of you and I love the emails that you send. Our conversation comes this week from quite a few of you who had concerns about Holiday Decor. Well, the Doc is in! I love a budget – I couldn’t survive without mine. So, let’s look at some ageless ideas to make your home a showplace. Grab some hot cocoa and your iPad! Here we go:
  1. Construction Paper Craziness: String popcorn and cranberries, cut paper stars front newspapers, or do classic construction paper garland you did as a kid. Who doesn’t love childhood ideas? I sure do! If you don’t have any construction paper just head to your nearest store and it’ll set you back about $1!
  2. Make Your Wreath: You ever notice how most wreaths cost over $100? Forget that, make your own. Use old ornaments, jewelry and cool trinkets sitting in your spare bedroom. Problem solved.
  3. Go Crazy with Lights: They are the cheapest and most festive thing you can buy. Put them over your headboard, on the trimming outside your house, your mantle, threaded through your fire escape, wrapped around decorative branches.
  4. Vamp up Votives: You see this everywhere: Clear votives with a candle in the center surrounded by chestnuts, pinecones, mini ornaments, circular peppermint candies, or whatever. Take your pick and go for it.
  5. Center Your Cards: My Mother always did this, she put the Holiday cards all over the house! Instead of being annoyed by the never ending cards you receive thank them for the free decor! Put your enviable card collection on your fridge or mantle.
  6. Homemade Art: Weren’t all those homemade ornaments you made as a kid the best? You can imprint thumbs, greenery, or whatever else you want — or cut out festive shapes like stars using cookie cutters. If you want it to smell amazing and look just like a cookie throw in some cinnamon on top. You’re Welcome.
  7. Feed the Birds: Buy some bird seed and have fun. Bird Seed Ornaments are really sweet for a backyard, balcony, or fire escapes.

Aren’t those ideas cool? No more breaking the bank! Everything you need is right in your own home. Get busy and make this the best Fashionable Holiday Decor your home has ever had.
