NEW DELHI — Sundar Singh Gurjar, the javelin thrower from India, returned to the country at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on the early morning of Sept. 5.
He had won a bronze medal for India in the javelin at the recently concluded Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
“I am thrilled to have won a medal for my country,” said Gurjar.
“I am thrilled that he won a medal for his country,” said Hema, his sister who had come to receive him.
“He made his country and parents proud. I am proud to be known as his sister.”
Gurjar captured bronze in Tokyo Paralympics with a season-best throw of 62.58 meters.

He was shown a red flag in his 3rd and 4th attempts, after which he landed 64.01 meters for his season-best in the 5th throw to land himself in a medal position.
The Sports Authority of India posted a video on their Twitter handle where Gurjar was seen warmly welcomed by the Indian officials.
“Our Champion Sundar is back, and India is thrilled on his arrival,” tweeted the Sports Authority of India.
“Take a look at the warm reception @SundarSGurjar received after fulfilling his dream of winning a medal for India at Tokyo.”
“In Indian Paralympic history, our country’s athletes have won a total of 19 medals (5 gold) in Tokyo Paralympics 2020. (8 Silver 6 Bronze) Wrote a new history out of which 1 medal is also mine,” wrote Gurjar in a tweet. “To all of you countrymen. Thanks for the love and support.”
Gurjar, after coming back, also highlighted the importance of the coaches in a tourney.
“Our coaches have a huge contribution in the game of all of us players,” said Gurjar.
“It is my request to Shri @narendramod Ji @PMOIndia @ianuragthakur @Anurag_Office Ji that our coaches should also get the same respect and rewards as we get.”
He feels that the coaches should be given the same respect people are giving to the medal winners.
“Some coaches have not received their awards yet,” said Gurjar.
“I am thrilled to see the way India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving priority to sports.”
Gurjar also retweeted the words of former Indian Olympian Abhinav Bindra who said that the greatest gift the citizens of India can give to their Paralympic Team and champions is to use the moment as a way to make the disabled population in the country more inclusive. That would be a fantastic impact leveraging on the power of sport!
