The City of Orlando District 5 special election is entering its final stretch. With only two contenders out of more than a half-dozen, former Florida State Representative Travaris McCurdy and Community Organizer Shaniqua “Shan” Rose are fighting for the role of City Commissioner which would allow them to represent Orlando’s District 5.
In the primary election, only a little over 2,100 registered voters voted in the election out of approximately 21,000. About 1,100 voted by mail, 293 voted early and 711 voted on Election Day. Shan Rose was the collected the most votes in that election. Rose captured approximately 25% of the vote and Travaris McCurdy was right behind her with a little over 23% of the vote.
Other candidates who did not make it to the run-off were, Ericka Dunlap, TiaKeysha Ellison, Lawanna Gelzer, Cameron Hope and Miles Mulrain.
The election comes on the heels of Federal Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) allegations that former Commissioner Hill exploited a 96-year-old woman. If the charges against Hill are dropped or if she is found not guilty, Hill will have the opportunity to return to her Council seat. Hill maintains her innocence.
Election Day for this run-off race is June 18th.
