Early Voting for the District 5 City of Orlando Commissioner’s race has ended. Orlando will know who will represent District 5 this coming Tuesday, June 18th.
Out of an initial field of multiple candidates, Shan “Shaniqua” Rose and Travaris McCurdy came out on top. Rose stated, “On day one after becoming Commissioner, I plan to meet with City staff to get an update on the upcoming budget and projects coming to the district.” Rose added that she plans to hold town halls to hear from the community if she wins the race.
McCurdy, who was endorsed by Mayor Buddy Dyer, said, “I’m from this community, born and raised in this community, I have served this community previously in an elected capacity and I understand the plights and the various communities in District 5.” McCurdy added that he understands the business community, language barriers and the overall desperate needs of the district.
On the last day of Early Voting, Supervisor of Elections Glen Gilzean visited four churches to encourage voters to go to the polls to vote for their District 5 candidate. Gilzean said, “This office has never sanctioned its own Souls to the Polls program. Today was the first step of doing that.”
Gilzean also announced that his Office will now have a faith-based voter education program grant. The grant will support working with faith leaders to educate residents about the voting process.
Gilzean was CEO of the Central Florida Urban League prior to his current role. Gilzean was appointed to the role after Bill Cowles retired early this year after serving more than 34 years as Orange County’s Supervisor of Elections.
Although early voting ends today, the Supervisor of Elections Office will still accept vote-by-mail ballots until 7pm on Election Day.
On Election Day, residents of District 5 can cast their votes at the Supervisor of Elections Office from 7am until 7pm. Please be sure to take a photo I.D. in order to vote.
