On Wednesday, Orange County Sheriff deputies responded to two drive-by shootings at a home in the 2100 block of San Jose Boulevard; one at 2:40 a.m. and another at 8:40 a.m. Deputies recovered shell casings at the scene but no evidence that anyone was shot.
Currently, a 16-year-old suspect is being charged in the drive-by shootings. Deputies were able to track the suspect to a residence in the 5200 block of Montague Place. At that location, deputies confronted several subjects, one of whom was the 16-year-old suspect, who was armed with a handgun that had an extended magazine. Two deputies fired their service weapons at the armed suspect, and another person was struck by gunfire in the foot and sustained a non-life threatening injury. None of the deputies were injured. At least one firearm was recovered from the scene.
In a press conference, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said, “We have no idea what the motivation for the drive-by is yet and our detectives are still working that case to find out what the motivation was.” Mina added, “I’m certain we’ll get to the bottom of it.” Mina said they do anticipate several charges for the drive-by shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once that process is completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation.
For now, the deputies who fired their weapons are on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.
