District 5 Elects Shan Rose As New City Commissioner

On Tuesday’s special election, District 5 voters elected Shan “Shaniqua” Rose as their new City of Orlando Commissioner.

Rose triumphed over opponent former State Representative Travaris McCurdy by more than 9% of the vote.

Rose told The Florida Sun, “I am grateful for the voters, the residents, the businesses, and I’m ready to continue to champion for this community. I look forward to meeting with the community over the next few weeks to come up with a collective roadmap for this district.”

McCurdy was clear when he spoke to his supporters about Rose delivering on her promises. McCurdy said, “She should also know that we are going to be watching and holding her accountable.”

This special election is a result of the suspension of District 5 City of Orlando Commissioner Regina Hill after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) accused Hill of exploiting a 96-year-old woman. That accusation has not been proven and Hill maintains her innocence.

If charges are dropped against Hill or if she is found not guilty, Hill will have the opportunity to return to her commission seat.
