Central Florida Leaders Highlight Contrast Between VP Harris’ Plan to Lower Housing Costs, Slam Trump’s Agenda to Make Housing More Expensive
Friday, in Eatonville, Central Florida Democratic leaders held a press conference calling on Floridians to elect Vice President Harris to help lower housing costs for working families and end America’s housing shortage. The Vice President recently proposed a comprehensive plan to end America’s housing shortage in the first four years of her presidency – a stark contrast from Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, which would make housing more expensive, raise mortgage costs, and allow corporate landlords to exploit families and spike rents for Floridians.
Eatonville Mayor Angela Gardner talked about the strides that have been made in Eatonville. She said federal dollars have allowed Eatonville to benefit from the affordable housing partners of the Biden-Harris administration.
City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has long been a champion for affordable housing. Mayor Dyer said, “Cities like Orlando are doing what they can, developing partnerships and leveraging funding opportunities to create more affordable housing. President Biden and Vice President Harris have been incredibly supportive of our work in Orlando. We recently used federal funding to transform a blighted hotel on Colonial Drive into an affordable apartment community with 150 units.”
“Vice President Harris knows that our nation’s affordability crisis is making it hard for tens of millions of Americans to make ends meet, while putting homeownership out of reach for too many,” Mayor Dyer said.
Reverend Mary Downey is advocates for affordable housing in the Central Florida area. Downey said she has seen the housing crisis in America too often. Downey said Vice President Harris is calling for the construction of 3 million new housing units across the country, which will make rents and mortgage payments cheaper by increasing the housing supply. “And all of those projects will create lots of good-paying jobs, strengthening local economies across the country,” Downey said.
As president, Donald Trump increased taxes on middle class homeowners, gave hundreds of billions of dollars in handouts to rich real estate developers, and fought to jack up rent for low-income Americans and working families. As a landlord, Trump was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent
Raised in a middle-class family, Vice President Harris knows that our nation’s housing affordability crisis is making it hard for Floridians to get by and has put the American dream of homeownership out of reach for too many working families. That’s why she’s making affordable housing a priority in her future Administration and has put forward the boldest housing plan in a generation to build 3 million new homes in the next four years, create a fairer rental market, and provide $25,000 in downpayment support for first-time homeowners.
