MUMBAI, India — On National Handloom Day on Aug. 7, 2021, many Bollywood celebs took to their respective social media accounts to express their love for handloom sarees.
Vidya Balan posted a carousel of images on her Instagram handle, where she is seen wearing a magenta saree. She even urged her followers to celebrate the creations of Indian weavers.
“The beauty of silk blossoms in the handlooms,” she wrote.
“The artistry and allure of Handloom Indian Silks are unmatched. Let us wear handloom silk products with pride and celebrate the magical creations of our weavers today and every day! That alone would be a fitting tribute to their passion and devotion towards their masterful craft (sic).”
Actress Chitrangda Singh paid a special tribute to the handloom workers of Assam by posting a picture on her Instagram handle in which she is seen wearing a traditional Assamese Mekhala Chador.
“Thank you so much @Sanjukta_Dutta_ for this beautiful saree. I am super excited to wear, a Mekhala Chador, such a special gift on this National Handloom Day (sic),” she wrote.
Author Tahira Kashyap, the wife of actor Ayushmann Khurrana, posted a monochrome and colorful picture of herself wearing a saree and recalled the time while she was battling cancer.
“This is from Dec. 1, 2018. I was done with 10 chemotherapy sessions. Used some spray and powder to cover the areas from where I was losing hair (sic),” she wrote.
“But did I want to shy away from the world? Nope! Love from family and friends, and most importantly, my faith in my practice, led me to believe and know that this version of myself is beautiful too. This is my #handloom story #handloomsarees.”
“Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein” actress Dia Mirza also shared an unseen picture from her wedding day where she is seen wearing a red saree. She wrote a special post dedicating the image to National Handloom Day.
“There is so much to love, respect, and treasure about our #IndianHandlooms!!!” she wrote.
“Have you ever witnessed our master craftsmen/women at work? It is easily one of the most spellbinding processes. The precision and fluidity with which those hands and feet move so perfectly synchronized with the rhythm of the loom creating poetry in motion. These craft forms are ours to celebrate every day (sic),” she wrote.
Actor Raveena Tandon and many others also shared her love for handloom products on National Handloom Day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 declared Aug. 7 as National Handloom Day to mark the Swadeshi movement as it was on this day that the movement was launched in 1905. The movement involved the revival of domestic products and production processes.
