Yesterday in Philadelphia, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris launched, “Black Voters for Biden-Harris,” the campaign’s national organizing program to bolster ongoing historic investments in outreach to the backbone of the Biden-Harris coalition – Black voters.
President Biden reminded voters of former President Donald Trump’s record while in office. Biden said, “Trump is trying to make the country forget just how dark and unsettling the country was when he was president.”
President Biden said, “Remember when the pandemic hit, 20 million people were out of work. When businesses and schools shut down, emergency rooms were overwhelmed. Black folks were hit harder than anyone else.” However, in just four years of the Biden administration, America has the lowest Black unemployment rate on record. In addition, Black wealth is up 60% since before the pandemic.
Handling student loan debt has been a goal of the administration since 2020. So far, the Biden-Harris administration has forgiven $165 billion in student loan debt for over 5 million Americans.
Vice President Harris addressed the issue of gun violence in America. “We took on the issue that Black Americans are 10 times more likely to be victims of gun homicides,” Harris said. “Gun violence is the number one cause of the death of the children of America… not car accidents, not cancer… gun violence.” The Vice President added, “so to address this crisis, under the president’s leadership, we passed the first major gun safety law in nearly 30 years.”
The president told the crowd, “For anyone who wonders if their vote matters, because Black Americans voted, Kamala and I are the Vice President and President of the United States.”
